WHAT IS ROAD WATCH?

Road Watch is a community-based initiative program that began in Caledon in 1995 as several lives were claimed in multi-vehicle collisions. With the cooperation of the police, local schools and residents, the program was implemented.

The Road Watch program gives the residents and visitors an opportunity to assist in keeping the community roads safe by reporting dangerous, aggressive driving.

There are three main elements to the Road Watch program. These are AWARENESS, EDUCATION and ENFORCEMENT. We all know that enforcement alone will not work. The citizens of our community must take ownership of the problems of dangerous, aggressive driving. By getting involved, they can be part of the solution and modify their behaviour and attitudes.

AWARENESS

Promoting general road safety through seminars, media coverage, advertising, and promotional material will help in making citizen aware of unsafe driving practices.

EDUCATION

Education is promoted at all levels. Seniors, Adults, and Youths are all targeted. It is important for everyone to learn about the choices that they are making and how these choices will affect their lives. Education is done through seminars, displays, schools, and contests.

ENFORCEMENT

Enforcement through incident report forms help assist Police Services to identify unsafe driving acts or “hot spots” that are traffic problem areas.
